Hear Me Out: The Evolution of My Social Media Life

social media strategy

In the Beginning

Looking back ten years ago, when I was 15, social media looked completely different—and if someone had told me it would one day become my career, I probably would’ve laughed in their face.

Back then, my go-to platforms were Instagram, Facebook, Vine, and (if we’re being generous) KIK—though that was more of a messaging app than anything else. Social media was simply how I stayed connected with school friends and family. I used to post everything from sunrise to sunset. I distinctly remember one moment when my parents yelled at me over something totally normal (in my opinion), and of course, the little rebel in me ran straight to Facebook to write: “I HATE MY PARENTS!”

At the time, my parents weren’t even on my friends list—but one of my family members was, and they promptly told my parents about the post. A few hours later, I found myself in a very uncomfortable conversation about what I’d shared.

Fast Forward to the Present

It’s funny now, and that moment actually taught me a huge lesson: not everything is meant for social media. Without even realizing it, I started to understand the importance of being intentional and strategic about what I post—something I now teach my clients. Funny how things come full circle.

Today, my favorite platforms are Instagram and TikTok. Instagram has been my tried-and-true—I've stuck by that app for longer than any other. But how I use it has completely changed. I used to post selfies for no reason, document every hangout with friends, and even plan "photoshoot days" just to post on my feed.

Now? I might post once every nine months—usually only if I go on a trip, have a particularly good picture, or want to drop a quick photo dump from my camera roll.

TikTok, on the other hand, has become my go-to for everything: entertainment, news, and even the occasional post of my own. My screen time on that app is... well, let’s just say I try not to look.

Even though I still consider myself “chronically online,” my approach to posting is way more thoughtful than it used to be. I’ve learned that not everything needs to be shared in real time—or even at all. And while I’m still deeply connected to the platforms I grew up with, I engage with them now in a way that feels much more aligned with who I am today.

Looking back, it’s wild to see how my personal habits with social media shaped the way I approach it professionally today. From oversharing teenage drama to barely posting at all, I’ve experienced the full spectrum—and it’s taught me that intention is everything.

Your Takeaway

Whether you’re managing a brand or just navigating your own online presence, having a strategy matters. It’s not about posting all the time—it’s about posting with purpose

What you share, how you share it, and when you choose to show up online should all align with who you are and what you value. That’s the sweet spot where authenticity meets impact—and that’s what I help others discover every day.
