It’s no secret that I love social media. I love connecting with people, building communities, and seeing what everyone is doing. Even more, I love educating others on social media. The moment I see that someone “gets it,” it all becomes clear to me and I am incredibly delighted I chose this path.
Some have busted my chops about starting a social media business, claiming I am jumping on the social media bandwagon. It’s hurtful, but I know the truth. My intent is pure. I truly love what I do and it shows in the continued drive I have for this business. I do believe there are people looking to capitalize on the business opportunity in social media, and some of these people have nothing more than dollar signs in their eyes. However, I think most of these people will quickly realize they are not cut out for a job in this field – it’s not just "easy money."
If you are going to be a business owner, you absolutely must be passionate about what you are doing. It’s no easy feat to own a business, so it’s important that you’re doing something you love. It will help you on the days you’re feeling sub-par.
It takes courage to admit you’re not doing what you love and it takes even more courage to make the commitment to pursue your passion on a leap of faith. I regularly encounter people who are miserable or feel stuck in their life. It’s not easy to leave your comfort zone and attempt to change your circumstances. I respect people that take this risk and are on their journey. Keep following your path to happiness. It will likely take time and effort, but I truly believe we can pursue anything we put our minds to. You have to take action, work hard, and never give up.
I am happy that I decided to pursue my passion. Granted, not all days are a walk in the park, but I will never go back. Most days are simply amazing. I look forward to my work and I get excited about it.

Hi Rachael--I really admire your honesty and enthusiasm about your work. Social media not just the flavor of the month, but it's not a field of work everyone is cut out for. If your talents and skills happen to match with a social media practice, then go for it!
I happen to be passionate about writing and storytelling. I studied journalism, worked in PR, and now do alumni communications at a medical school. I get to hear great stories all the time and feel inspired by their passion to help others.

So far, I'm seeing a "common thread" in the comments. Yep, you guessed it. I took a two-year course in journalism. I've had a genuine love of language arts since elementary school - a love affair with words. No wonder blogging is my all-time favorite social media platform. 🙂
Having said that, it won't surprise you I'm exceedingly passionate about editing and proofreading. Many of my online friends, blogging buddies, and loyal readership have commented and complimented me on my "critical eye". At the moment, I'm in the market for editing and proofreading projects. I read some stats recently indicating EIGHTY PERCENT of employees HATE their jobs. That's a staggering number of people! My biggest suspicion is they're doing what they're doing simply for the "paycheck" and not because there's any "passion" involved. In my estimation, that's pretty sad.
My biggest goal for 2011 is to say goodbye to the corporate world, stop working to fulfill someone else's dreams, and design a life that's right for me.
It's wonderful to meet someone who's already doing that.
