Last week, I shared that my Dad was admitted to the hospital with an infection requiring intravenous antibiotics. Over the weekend, his doctors uncovered an unrelated but serious health concern that required an emergency procedure followed by time in the ICU. This past week was a reminder of how fragile life is and how challenging it can be to navigate uncertainty.
I am no stranger to family emergencies. In 2021 and 2022, my mother had more than a dozen emergent situations related to her physical and mental health. During that time, I got a crash course in handling chaos. Those lessons learned came in handy this past week, and I want to share them in the hope that they might help you deal with the trauma of uncertain times.
Six Ways to Carry On Through Chaos
1. Embrace transparency.
Be open and transparent with the people around you about your personal struggles. This fosters understanding, maintains professionalism, and builds trust.
2. Compartmentalize effectively.
Divide your time and attention between work and personal obstacles, aiming to be fully present and focused on each aspect by minimizing distractions. Allocate specific time in the evenings to address personal challenges so that they do not interfere with your work during the day.
3. Prioritize self-care.
Take care of yourself so that you have the energy to better support others. Schedule activities like massages, pedicures, exercise, and relaxation to alleviate mental strain and maintain overall well-being.
4. Give yourself space.
Allowing space to reflect on your feelings facilitates clarity and emotional healing. Give yourself breathing room during adversity. Take time to grieve, process challenges, and regain emotional balance.
5. Embrace breaks.
Breaks are essential for sustaining productivity and overall well-being. Taking regular breaks helps rejuvenate your mind and body. Prioritize proper rest to replenish your energy.
6. Maintain a positive attitude.
A positive attitude empowers you to see past your challenges and envision brighter days ahead. Foster a positive mindset, even in challenging times. Seek inspiration from books or resources that remind you that you can control your reactions and overcome obstacles.
