We all have dream clients, right? Maybe yours is to work with a famous musician or an influencer you admire. Or perhaps you lay awake at night manifesting the perfect job opening tailor-made for you at your favorite brand.
If you ask me about my dream client, you might find my answer a bit unconventional. But I’m going to venture to speak it into existence anyway…
I want to be a slime creator’s video editor.
If this sounds like nonsense, let me explain. In the early days of Instagram and TikTok, a new type of viral content began to pop up all over everyone's timelines—videos featuring a toy product called “Slime.” The squishy, satisfying ball of goo had twofold appeal:
- The satisfying noises it made when anyone played with it—evoking psychological and physical effects similar to Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (a.k.a. ASMR), which was also booming at the time, and
- The DIY element (Sooo 2015, am I right?). You can make your own version of Slime at home with simple ingredients, such as glue, borax, and food coloring.
With all that going for it, naturally, slime slid into social media trends.
Simply Irresistible
Slime-centered content has grown by leaps and bounds from its early days. Homemade slime recipes no longer consist of just glue and dish soap; they have evolved, creating slime subcategories based on ingredients, texture, and sensation. There are entire businesses, YouTube channels, and viral videos dedicated to playing with the goo.
I, as a video editor, want in on the action.
The content alone is quite appealing to me. It’s a welcome break from the overstimulation that is social media. I experience a soothing brain vacation whenever a slime video interrupts my scrolling. I’m not ashamed to disclose that I’ve watched full four-hour long slime/soap cutting/squishing compilations on YouTube to decompress on difficult days.
Because of my first-hand experience with the benefits of watching the wonder of slime, I think I’m the perfect candidate to edit videos that feature its miraculous transformative powers.
The Magic Formula
Slime content typically follows a specific formula designed to grab your attention and keep you watching. It’s soothing yet fast paced and requires a knowledgeable, trained eye to know what parts are appealing and why. With my personal interest in slime content and marketing experience, I already know what audiences are looking for. Cutting down hours and hours of slime footage would not only be enjoyable for me but also easy, given that I have the wants and needs of the audience embedded in my own brain.
Additionally, slime content requires a decent amount of audio refining. And unlike with podcasts or dialogue-heavy content, there’s no Premiere Pro preset that can elicit the famed “brain tingles” of ASMR. That’s where my experience with audio editing comes in (shoutout to my Nashville friends who produce their own music). And, as someone who experiences ASMR brain tingles, I have an ear for how to trigger them.
