The last time you heard from me, I was about to embark on our annual winter vacation in Jamaica. Well, I’m back and, as promised, I am sharing my experience of traveling during the pandemic.
If you recall, the realities of traveling now include a lot more protocols, such as a negative COVID-19 test result to check-in for a flight, a Travel Authorization to board the airlines, and the new CDC requirement to produce a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of departure back to the United States. And, of course, there is the relentless mask-wearing in the airports, on the plane, and in any indoor public places — on and off the resort.
The Skinny
While the testing and the masks were inconvenient, it really wasn’t bad. We had an issue with the testing on the resort, which we felt could have been handled a lot better. And, there was a situation on the plane home, where the flight attendant said they no longer allow masks that cover your neck. So, Nathan had to wear another mask, like the n95 mask, around his face. But, honestly, it was about as normal as it gets, given what we now consider ‘normal.’
There were people who obeyed the rules — and people who didn’t. We kept to ourselves and tried to enjoy the time away. If anything, I think the most challenging part of the trip was managing my own anxieties. I had trouble relaxing, which probably comes as no surprise, given the pandemic and its reverberating effects. (See a previous post about the anxiety of the pandemic).
Many live for the weekend, but we live for vacation. We would gladly do it all over again. I only wish the time did not go by so quickly. In short, yes, it was totally worth it.
